PLAINFIELD, Illinois (JGL) – Jesuit Fr. Carlos Llagas, a mass celebrant at the birthday party of Atty. Arcadio “Jun” Joaquin, Jr. here recently said that “you should listen to your angels as you conduct your daily living.”
Father Llagas said during the homily that in the Philippines even children, who have no “yayas” or caregivers, when parents get home from work, they find their children free from harm because Archangel Michael, a cherubim, is watching over them.
“Michael is usually on the left shoulder while Archangel Raphael (also a cherubim) is usually at right, while Archangel Raphael (also a cherubim) inspires our heart.”
When asked what angel should look after the celebrator, Jun Joaquin, Father Llagas suggested it should be Seraphim Uriel, who watches over those people with long life.
The celebrator (Jun Joaquin), when asked what he feels on his birthday, quipped, “Like in the game of basketball at 76 (years old), I am just at halftime.”
Father Llagas said, “Yeah (76 is) half time. Our GPL or genetic potential for longevity is 150 years.”
Dozens of well-wishers streamed into Juan Joaquin’s massive home for the daylong celebration, which has been an annual ritual for him, his wife, Dr. Alice R. Joaquin, and their family.
It was in 1976 when Jun passed the Illinois bar exam and has since become a general law practitioner. Born in Bangui, Ilocos Norte 76 years ago, Jun passed the Philippines bar in 1964 and became a trial lawyer for law firm ROSS, SELPH & CARRASCOSO in Manila while exclusively handling cases of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) when he was with the law firm. But he and his colleagues in the law firm were also retained to handle other cases of such companies as American President Lines; U.S. Lines; Maersk Line, First National City Bank of New York, Cummins Diesel, International Harvester, all merchant vessels entering the Philippines, which were insured by the Lloyd’s of London, Tabacalera, Caltex and Air France.
