World boxing icon and congressman Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao expects to receive updates on the negotiations for his fight against undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather this January.
Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, has said that negotiations are still ongoing with CBS/Showtime boss Les Moonves, whose network exclusively broadcasts Mayweather’s fights.
“Hintayin na lang siguro natin, kasi hindi pa ako naka-update,” Pacquiao was quoted by ABS-CBN News as saying. “Hintayin natin ‘yung update.”
“Siguro, after ng New Year, after nitong mga holidays, malalaman natin,” he added.
Before the holidays, Pacquiao said it was his Christmas wish that his fight against Mayweather will happen in 2015.
If the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout happens, it is touted to be the richest fight in boxing history with one group already offering $120 million to the American champion to fight the Filipino icon. Under the offer, Pacquiao will reportedly rake in $40 to $70 million.
Previous offers would have Pacquiao and Mayweather halve equally the prize of $100 million. With Pacquiao’s loss to his Mexican nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather said he wants to dictate the fight, including the sharing. Pacquiao, since recovering from the loss with two successive wins against Timothy Bradley and Chris Algieri, eventually agreed to a lesser share of profit if only the fight will happen as demanded by boxing enthusiasts.
After winning over Algieri in Macau, Pacquiao challenged Mayweather to face him.
Surprisingly, Mayweather responded by saying he “would love” to fight Pacquiao and set May 2 as their fight date.
Arum rejected the May 2 fight date because it is a Mexican holiday, so he suggested a June schedule.
Since then, the two fighters have been exchanging barbs through social media.
“Hintayin na lang natin makasa ‘yung laban,” said Pacquiao. “Pumirma siya ng kontrata.”
Many boxing greats themselves revealed their enthusiasm to see the dream fight between the two great boxing warriors, with many predicting a win by either fighter.
And this early, bets are being placed on the two fighters, with the American world champion a three-to-one favourite at this time.
Arum said a May date for Pacquiao versus Mayweather is not ideal since it has been eyed for a collision course between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez of Mexico and Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico to commemorate Cinco de Mayo, a matchup that also has all the trappings of a super blockbuster.
An ABS-CBN report stated that there are a lot of obstacles to be cleared for a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown to happen even if both fighters have exchanged words that they are willing to face each other the soonest.
Mayweather said he is raring to face Pacquiao in a welterweight unification war on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas provided that he calls the shots in the negotiations.
Boasting that he is the A-side and Pacquiao is the B-side, Mayweather said that the Filipino doesn’t have the right to impose his own terms, adding that when he fought Oscar Dela Hoya in 2007, he obliged to everything the Golden Boy wanted.
De la Hoya himself predicted Mayweather victory over Pacquiao but warned the American to be wary about the skills of the Filipino fighting congressman.
