Only One Life

We have only one life and so soon it will pass. Life is temporary and extremely brief. It is likened to a mist, a breath, a wisp of smoke, “I am here on earth for just a little while.” (Psalm 119:19).
The earth is a temporary home. We are just passing through. We won’t be here for long. All the riches and fame and pleasures in this world will pass away. So let’s not get too attached to all these material things which are just temporal ones. “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor. 4:18) Our faith in God is unseen only God can see it and it’s eternal.
The pictures of the old age, the old house and as an old man is God’s design for life. (Ecclesiastes 12:3-7)
3　In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves (legs become weak), and the grinders cease because they are few (few remaining teeth), and those that look out of the windows be darkened (weak eyes).
4　And the doors shall be shut in the streets (ears that scarcely hear), when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird (decrease in appreciation for music), and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5　Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high (signifies the difficulty of ascending a height), and fears shall be in the way (fear of falling when walking), and the almond tree shall flourish (grey hair), and the grasshopper shall be a burden (crippled and bent limbs impair mobility), and desire shall fail (sexually impotent): because man goeth to his long home (absence from the earth), and the mourners go about the streets (wailers at the funeral):
6　Or ever the silver cord be loosed (loosed of life support), or the golden bowl be broken (signifies the crash of death), or the pitcher be broken at the fountain (fragile life is lost), or the wheel broken at the cistern (the apparatus for sustaining life is ruined).
7　Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was (man’s body returns to dust): and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it (man’s spirit returns to God for judgment).
When we get old, we become very sickly and very fragile. Everything hurts. If it does not hurt, it does not work. The Lord is reminding us that our time here on earth is numbered. “Lord remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered and that my life is fleeting away.” (Psalm 39:4)
Life in this world is full of uncertainties: Today, we are in perfect health and full of life but we do not know what will happen tomorrow. But one thing is sure, death is sure. “For it is appointed unto man once to die and after this is judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)
One more thing is sure, there is judgment. We cannot escape standing before God after we die. But Jesus said, “verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my Word and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life.” (John 5:24)
We have only one life but the desire of our Lord Jesus Christ is to live His life in us and through us. “I am crucified with Christ nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ liveth in me and the life which now I live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
