SKOKIE, IL: Skokie Plan Commissioner and active Filipino American community leader, Angeles “Jelly” Carandang accepted the “Mission HOPE Award” from the Houston Royal Oaks Lions Club (HROLC) during its 6th Gala and Masquerade Ball last October 4, 2014 in Houston, TX. The award is given to those who helped others excel through service.
Jelly has started a biennial humanitarian mission in 2005 and since that time, HROLC has provided consistent help and support as a co-sponsor, together with the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), and other organizations based in Illinois. Jelly is the current chair of NaFFAA Region 3 West, consisting of Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin and the immediate past NaFFAA Illinois chair. The Humanitarian Mission provides free medical, dental, and optical services to selected areas in the Philippines, in partnership with the beneficiary municipalities. In addition, they also provide free medicines, supplies, eyeglasses and medical equipment. The next mission is scheduled for February 2 to 6, 2015, with 3 towns in Batangas and Lubang, Mindoro as beneficiaries. Volunteers from Illinois, California, Kentucky, and Texas will join and assist the local volunteers from these municipalities.
