QUEZON CITY — The Sandiganbayan has issued a freeze order against the assets of former Chief Justice Renato C. Corona and his wife, Cristina.
In an order of the Sandiganbayan Second Division, it directed Sheriff Alex Valencia to immediately implement the freeze order.
This was in connection with the forfeiture case against the Corona couple for their alleged violation of the law for ill-gotten wealth.
Corona was impeached as the Philippines’ 23rd Chief Justice for alleged ill-gotten wealth and non-declaration in his Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALNs) of all his assets.
The Sandiganbayan Second Division has ordered the freeze of some P130 million in assets of the former chief justice and his wife Cristina.
It issued the writ of preliminary attachment on May 5, 2014, however, the document was made public only last Thursday.
A special panel of investigators of the Office of the Ombudsman (Ombudsman) earlier determined that from the years 2001 to 2011, the Corona couple earned a total income
of P30,369,120.13, of which P27,145,472.68 was earned by Renato Corona, and another P3,223,647.45 was earned by Cristina.
The Senate Impeachment Court convicted Corona for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the 1987 Constitution on May 29, 2012.
It ruled that Corona was guilty of Article II of the impeachment complaint such that the chief justice did not fully disclose his true assets in his SALNs.
