MANILA – “10,000 Hours,” a movie purportedly about former Senator Panfilo Lacson’s escape from the law after being charged with the murder of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver in 2000, won the top honors as best picture in the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival.
Ironically, the movie which stars Robin Padilla, is one of the least seen in the filmfest as it is lumped in the last four of the eight entries to the festival.Padilla, however, won the best actor trophy.
“My Little Bossings,” which stars Vic Sotto, Kris Aquino, Ryzza Mae Dizon and James “Bimby” Yap Jr., is this year’s top grosser and the third best picture of the filmfest.
The second Best Picture honors went to the comedy flick “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” which stars Vice Ganda. Its lead actress, Maricel Soriano, romped away with the Best Actress Award for her role as a devoted mother in the movie
“Boy Golden,” an ER Ejercito starrer which won acclaim from critics and was considered a major contender to the top awards, failed to garner any award.
Aside from the best picture award, the movie “10,000 Hours” won 13 other awards, including the Best Director for Joyce Bernal.
The festival posted a new record in revenues,P234 million gross earnings nationwide after only two days, surpassing last year’s record by 34%.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.Chairman Francis Tolentino, the filmfest chairman, hailed the new record posted by the film fest.
The film “10,000 Hours” won also the Best Story, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Supporting Actor for Pen Medina, Best Editing, Best Musical Score, Best Sound Engineering, Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design.
The best screenplay award went to Ryllah Epifania Berico and the best story trophy to Neil Arce, Bela Padilla, Peter Serrano and Dos Quizon, all for “10,000 Hours.”
“10,000 Hours” copped the best cinematography for Marissa Floirendo, best editing for Marya Ignacio, best production design for Joey Luna, best visual effects for Central Digital, best musical score for Teresa Barrazo and best sound recording for Emmanuel Clemente.
The trophy  is Robin’s first Best Actor award since 2006 when he won the FAMAS, Gawad Urian and the Golden Screen awards for his lead role in “La Visa Loca”.
“10,000 Hours” is also the first time Robin and Direk Joyce worked together on a project after working together four times in the films “Tunay na Tunay: Gets Mo, Gets Ko”, “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw”, “Buhay Kamao” and “Pagdating ng Panahon” from the year 2000 to 2001.
Aside from “Boy Golden,” other films that failed to win a single award were “Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel”, “Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir” and “Kaleidoscope World”.
Noting the poor showing in the gates of their movie, Robin Padilla and Joyce Bernal urged people to see the movie in their speech during the awards ceremonies.
Bernal also thanked Lacson for trusting her with leading the project, which was initially done with consultation with the lawmaker. “Maraming salamat at pinagkatiwala niyo sa akin ito,” she said.
“Hindi pa po kami kumikita, so ito na muna,” she said.
Robin Padilla, in his award acceptance statement, said that the three top earners have earned back their respective film budgets  but his movie has a long way to go. “Si Vic Sotto, boundary na. Ang ‘Girl, Boy’ at ‘Pagpag,’ boundary na rin. Kami, hindi pa,” Padilla said in his thank-you speech.
He added: “Wala man sa atin ang salapi, pero na sa atin ang karangalan. Sa mga hindi pa po nakakanuod, oras na para panoorin ninyo.”
“10,000 Hours” also won two special awards – the FPJ Memorial Award for Excellence, and the Gat Puno Villegas Cultural Award.
Named 2nd and 3rd Best Picture, respectively, were the comedy flicks “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” and “My Little Bossings,” which both took home acting prizes for their respective stars.
Aiza Seguerra and Ryzza Mae Dizon received the trophies for Best Supporting Actress and Best Child Performer, respectively, in the Kris Aquino-produced film “My Little Bossings.”.
Aquino, who hosted the awards ceremony along with actress KC Concepcion, also accepted the Best Original Theme Song award won by “My Little Bossings.”
The horror film “Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay,” which trailed the two comedy movies in earnings, romped off with the Youth Choice Award and the Best Makeup trophy.
The ER Ejercito-starrer “Boy Golden: The Arturo Porcuna Story” only took home the Best Float trophy for its Parade of Stars showcase. In the last three editions of the festival, Ejercito’s self-produced movies including “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” dominated categories they were nominated in.
In the New Wave section of the film festival, “Dukit” won big among the five full-length entries, with three of its stars – Willy Layug, Bambalito Lacap, and Bor Ocampo — tying as Best Actor. The film, which centers on a famed sculptor and his tragic past, also won Best Picture and Best Director for Armando Lao.
Agot Isidro also got the top acting prize in the New Wave section for her role as a woman battling schizophrenia in “Mga Anino ng Kahapon.” The Alvin Yapan film also received the Special Jury Prize in its section.
