Yolanda death toll now at 6,155; hundreds are not yet buried


QUEZON CITY (PilipinasNews)  –The death toll from super typhoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan) continues to rise with more bodies unearthed from the debris.
As of last week, the toll rose to 6,155 dead with about 2,000 still missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Meanwhile, some 1,400 dead victims of super typhoon Yolanda lay unburied in the outskirts of Tacloban City which already has alarmed residents in nearby areas.
The 1,400 corpses are in sealed black body bags swarming with flies, sending stench that affected the people’s appetite and sleep. The residents of the area appealed to authorities to do something fast about the bodies.

The NDRRMC said the Eastern Visayas which includes Tacloban City had the most number of casualties with 5,757 dead, followed by Western Visayas with 294 dead.
In the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces), three people were listed dead; Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), 19; Bicol, 6;  Central Visayas, 74; Zamboanga Peninsula, 1; and Caraga,1.
The NDRRMC also said 28,626 people were injured while the missing persons rose to 1,785.
At least 3,424,593 families or 16,078,181 people in 12,139 villages in
44 provinces were affected, while 890,895 families or 4,095,280 people were displaced.
Of those displaced, 20,924 families or 101,527 people are still staying in 381 evacuation centers.
Damage caused by Yolanda was still estimated to P36.662 billion, including P18.336 billion in infrastructure and P18.354 billion in agriculture. The estimate of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) is about P60 billion in damages and losses.
The NDRRMC said the number of destroyed houses has reached 1,140,332 including 550,928 destroyed and 589,404 damaged.
It added that total cost of government assistance for the affected families has reached P1.218 billion.
The Department of Social and Welfare Development (DSWD) has allocated P867 million; local government units (LGUs), P116 million; Department of Health (DOH), P177 million; and non-governmental organizations/other government organizations, P56 million.
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said 35,489 people, 1,351 vehicles, 118 seacraft, 163 aircraft and 28,361 other assets/equipment from the national and local agencies have been deployed to strategic areas to expedite response and medical operations.
