Yolanda death toll now at 5,598, damage rises to P27.84 billion

TACLOBAN CITY (PinoyNews) — The death toll from super typhoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan) rose to almost 5,600 with 1,600 still missing while the cost of damage also went up to P27.839 billion.

The  number of destroyed houses has reached 1,168,106 including 580,481 destroyed and 587,625 damaged.
These were disclosed by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in its latest bulletin.
It said the death toll is now at 5,598 with the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces) having 3 fatalities; Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), 19; Bicol, 7; Western Visayas, 238; Central Visayas, 74; Eastern Visayas, 5,255; Zamboanga Peninsula, 1; and Caraga,1.
The NDRRMC also said 26,136 people were injured while 1,759 remain missing.
At least 2,325,638 families or 10,956,46 individuals were affected in 11,996 villages in 44 provinces. Of these, 48,239 families or 219,158 people are still staying in 1,095 evacuation centers.
Damage caused by Yolanda was estimated at P27.839 billion, including P15.556 billion in infrastructure and P12.283 billion in agriculture.
The NDRRMC noted increases in damage to roads and bridges at P12.705 billion and to crops (P5.948 billion), livestock (P2.213 billion), fisheries (P2.259 billion), and other agricultural infrastructure (P1.65 billion).
It added that total cost of government assistance for the affected families has reached at P630.983 million.
The Department of Social and Welfare Development (DSWD) has allocated P483 million;
local government units (LGUs), P60 million; Department of Health (DOH), P32.958 million; and non-governmental organizations/other government organizations, P54.974 million.
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said 34,756 people, 1,336 vehicles, 111 seacraft, 162 aircraft and 28,431 other assets/equipment from the national and local agencies have been deployed to strategic areas to expedite response and medical operations.
