Bishop predicts Aquino won’t finish his term

MANILA – “Chances are high that President Aquino will not finish his term, if he continues to listen only to two of his Cabinet members, and refuses to heed the voice of the people.”
Thus said Catholic Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez as he gave his prediction on the President during a weekly forum held in Intramuros, Manila. His prediction was reported by Pat C. Santos and Benjamin B. Pulta in the Daily Tribune, a perceived opposition paper. Continue reading
No more RP, it’s now PH for Philippines

MANILA — Instead of using RP, which is the acronym for the Republic of the Philippines, the country is now shifting to initials PH or PHL.
The shift was initiated by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and its Foreign Service Posts (FSPs) which said that the new initials were in keeping with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Continue reading
Ex-Lacson aide loses bid to stop extradition

MANILA – A United States District Court judge has denied the petition by former Senior Supt. Michael Ray Aquino to stop his extradition to the Philippines to face trial for the murders of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito in November 2000.
This was disclosed by Justice Secretary Leila de Lima who welcomed the ruling dated October 21 of US District Court Judge Stanley Chesler of Newark, New Jersey. Continue reading

MANILA – Overseas Filipino can now send remittances to the Philippines directly to Smart Communications, Inc. and Globe Telecom mobile subscribers through Western Union agents located in 27 countries.
To avail of the service, Smart said Filipinos working abroad can visit the 70,000 Western Union agents located in 27 countries, or its website in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the United States to remit directly to the Smart money account to their beneficiaries in the country. US gives $800,000 more for Luzon typhoon victims

MANILA — “Ang lakas ng bagyo, tulungan natin ang mga nangangailangan. (The typhoon was really that strong. Help is due to those who need it).”
With these words, U.S. ambassador to Manila Harry Thomas, Jr. announced additional $800,000 in grant for relief efforts in Northern Luzon, adding the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) has allowed Filipino and American militaries “to work seamlessly together” to respond to victims of typhoon Juan. P2 M reward eyed for Lacson’s arrest

MANILA— Justice Secretary Leila de Lima has hinted that Sen. Panfilo Lacson may be hiding in the Philippines and that a P2 million reward for any information that would lead to his arrest is being considered.
De Lima made the statement after meeting with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and assessed the case of the fugitive senator who has been tagged in the killing of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito.

Webb asks SC to dismiss murder case against him

MANILA — The camp of Hubert Webb, one of the convicts in the Vizconde massacre case, filed on Thursday before the Supreme Court (SC) an urgent motion seeking the dismissal of the criminal charges filed against him.
At the same time, Webb, son of former Senator Freddie Webb, also asked the SC to release him from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) where he has been incarcerated for 15 years already. Continue reading
