Mactan airport gets ‘high grades’ in first full-scale emergency drill

June 4, 2010 CEBU CITY – The Mactan- Cebu International Airport (MCIAA) got “high grades” from evaluators of its first full-scale emergency exercise held last Friday, boosting the country’s second busiest airport’s bid to regain a higher rating in airworthiness.

Some 100 personnel from various agencies showed how to rescue passengers from a site with a burning fuselage after a crash landing at the northwest end of the runway. Continue reading

Cebu Pacific now RP’s largest airline

June 11, 2010 MANILA — Cebu Pacific (CEB) is now the Philippines’ largest airline by total number of passengers flown on domestic and international routes.

Based on Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) data, CEB flew 2,448,990 domestic and international passengers from January to March this year, almost 110,000 more than Philippine Airlines’ system-wide figures of 2,339,788. Continue reading

Boracay posts P5 billion in tourism revenue

June 11, 2010 ILOILO CITY –- Boracay has been very robust in the first four months of 2010, posting a whopping revenue of P5.3 billion in just four months.

Likewise, Boracay, famous for its white sand beach, has collected P1.86 billion (P1,863,139,206.60) worth of receipts from its tourism industry in for the month of April alone, according to the Depart- ment of Tourism.

The tourism revenue has not fallen below the one billion mark and steadily increased since January. DOT data showed that the number of tourists that visited Boracay increased by 16.19 percent in the first quarter of the year. Around 291, 443 tourists both foreign and domestic tourists visited the island as of April this year when compared with 250, 843 last year. Continue reading

Cebu named ‘Best Honeymoon Destination’ in World Fair in Shanghai

June 18, 2010 CEBU CITY – Cebu has been adjudged as the “Best Honeymoon Destination” at the World Trade Fair 2010 in Shanghai, China.

This was announced by the Department of Tourism which gathered about 500 trade buyers from tourism association, outbound travel agencies, and tour operators.

The win was declared after a public vote and a strict evaluation process undertaken by professional jurors from the Shanghai Tourism Municipal Administration, VNU Exhibitions Asia, and Shanghai International Conference Management Organization. Continue reading

Mati City in Davao eyed as next Hong Kong

June 18, 2010 The local government of Mati City, Davao Oriental has envisioned making their locality the next Hong Kong or Singapore in the Philippines in the next 25 years.

Mati City Councilor Rey Oliveros, chairmanof the committees ontourism and peace and order of the City Council, said the local government, led by Mati Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat, has already laid down the groundwork for this vision starting with the creation of a Mati Baywalk that will be comparable to the baywalk along Roxas Boulevard in Manila. RP’s Corteza rules U.S. Open 10-Ball tilt in Las Vegas

June 2, 2010 LAS VEGAS/MANILA— Another Filipino billiards icon, this time it is Lee Vann “The Slayer” Corteza who emerged as champion in a billiards championship in Las Vega, Nevada.

Corteza narrowly defeated Chinese Lo Hiwen (13-12) in their final rematch last Sunday to rule the 2010 U.S. Open 10-Ball championship at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, for his back-to-back title. Corteza bagged the top prize of $ 20,000 and shot up to fifth in the world ranking, based on the World Pool Billiard Association following his second victory at the Annual Hard Times-Mezz Cues 10-Ball Open title at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, Los Angeles, California two weeks ago. June 11, 2010 World boxing icon in US for two-week family vacation

If negotiations for the mega fight between world boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. in November fizzles out, the Filipino boxing superstar may engage Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in a rematch.

This loomed as Pacquiao left Tuesday for the United States for a well deserved vacation in US and cruise off Mexico and to personally receive his Boxer of the Decade and 2009 Boxer of the Year Awards from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) in ceremonies on June 4 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. RP’s Paragua beats Kleiman for 12th US board title

June 18, 2010 MANILA — Grandmaster Mark Callano Paragua continues winning abroad by beating American International Master (IM)-elect Jake Kleiman in the fourth and final round to rule the Original 4 rated Games Tonight last June 10 at the Chess Center of famous Marshall Chess Club in New York.

The 2003 Vietnam Southeast Asian Games most bemedalled athlete Paragua, who beat Cyril Sigamoney, Yaron Grivili and Oliver Chernin in the first three rounds, finished unbeaten with four points in the 42 player’s field, four round- Swiss event.
