Paul Ryan and Ayn Rand

by Rodel Rodis
August 16, 2011
When I attended mass at our local Catholic parish church recently, I heard the priest talk about the rich man who ran up to Jesus and asked him “what must I do to inherit everlasting life?” As Luke 18:18-24 recounts it, the priest said,” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Telltale Signs: Boycott China, not Chinese

by Rodel Rodis
August 1, 2011
This is not just splitting hairs like a distinction without a difference. In his July 19 Inquirer article entitled “The call to boycott Chinese products” (http://opinion.inquirer.net/32863/the-call-to-boycott-chinese-products), Prof. Randy David comments on the call for a global boycott of “China-made products” which he also refers to interchangeably as “Chinese products”. Can aging be delayed?

by Dr. Philip S. Chua.
July 16, 2012
Why do we age? Just like machines and engines, our body ages because of the cumulative damages to our cells, tissues and organs (resulting from daily “wear and tear” and the self-abuse humans are well known for) that exceeds our body’s ability to repair them. Continue reading

Historical Irony of Independence Day

by Rodel Rodis
June 16, 2011
Apolinario Mabini, the author of the Constitution of the First Philippine Republic in Malolos in 1898, was not pleased with a phrase in the Declaration of Philippine Independence that Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista drafted at the direction of the Republic’s first president, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. When he first heard it on June 12, 1898, Mabini asked that the phrase be excised. At Aguinaldo’s insistence, however, the phrase was retained. Continue reading

SALN—a weapon of good governance

by Rodel Rodis
June 1, 2011
Soon after the dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his family fled to the US in the aftermath of the 1986 People Power uprising, the Philippine comedic duo of Noel Trinidad and Subas Herrera (“Champoy”) embarked on a comedy tour of the US. One line that always drew howls of laughter was Subas’s comment about how much he felt right at home in the US “because this is where our taxes have been spent.” Continue reading

Act of Valor – Act of Racial Profiling of Filipinos

by Rodel Rodis
April 16, 2011
In my review of “Act of Valor” last week, I included a criticism of the movie from a Jewish-American writer, Debbie Schlussel, who labeled it “an anti-Semitic tripe wrapped in the American flag with a Navy SEAL cherry on top” because, in her view, “the script makes a Jewish billionaire the bad guy and the smuggler and financier behind the major terrorism plot.” Continue reading

March 16, 2011
SAN FRANCISCO – The resolve by the US Pinoys for Good Governance (USP4GG) to petition the International Criminal Court (ICC) to reconsider and reject the election of Sen.
