Every year in March, we celebrate the International Women’s History Month (IWHM). Like any special day devoted to a cause, IWHM brings attention to the many issues important to women, equality and empowerment among them. It looks like women’s causes are making inroads in the traditional American psyche. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, signed by President Barack Obama in January 2009, is one such advancement and is considered a victory for all women in the work force who took lesser pay for the same kind of work they do as their male counterparts. In the Philippines the official campaign period, 12 additional members of the Philippine Senate and more than 100 party-list groups started this week with the two major political coalitions firing off their campaigns separately – in Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila for the administration ticket and in Cebu City for the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). Today’s generation must seek, formulate and enforce badly needed reforms in our broken system soon or suffer the consequence of inaction or delay not much later. We have had more than enough of the political posturing and special-interest wrangling while bad legislations and practices go unchecked and continue to put this nation in peril. The Philippines has a lot to celebrate and be thankful for this New Year. For one, the country’s economy is into unprecedented growth. The Philippine GDP growth for the 3rd quarter hit a two-year high of 7.1 percent— the highest in Southeast Asia, and among the top performing economies in Asia. The Philippine Stock Exchange index this year broke record high after record high, soaring above expectations and breaching the 5,800 mark and the Philippine Peso appreciated by as much as 6 percent last year and is projected to gain even more strength this year.
